HUBERT L. LINDSEY

45 years ago a woman and her two boys took on the name of LINDSEY as a diminuitive man named Hubert stepped into their lives. She was a single mom of 5 kids waitressing at a bar. She picked him up at the bar, brought him home and he never left.

He woke up one morning in his early twenties to find one side of his body paralyzed, but you never really thought of him as handicapped because he was so ingenious at survival. The two little boys ages 8 and 6 quickly adopted him as dad Linz.

"Lindsey" as he was lovingly called died on August 14, 2009. None of us know much about his life before the age of 36 when he joined us but we do know that he touched us.

His love, and our matriarchal rock died 25 years ago. That unique, strong willed, brilliant woman still has power beyond the grave to penetrate our thoughts and minds. "Lindsey" loved her and cared for her through all sickness and health. I applaud him and praise him for that. Denny, mom, grammy and beautiful Desneiges had an older handicapped daughter named Jeannie. "Lindsey" always remembered her and was cognizant of her care to the end. He became a good friend to Denny's other daughter, Laurie who was well out the door when he came in and he mourned the loss of her oldest son, John who died way too young.

He lived alone in a mobile home tinkering in his workshop on his latest inventions. He traveled to the river or irrigation ditches to catch fish for his pond and shoot crows or skeet. He preferred the solitary life and suffered from his own personal demons of depression and alcoholism. He never assumed that this family was his and was shocked when we all gathered to celebrate his 70th birthday. He was a lover of nature, classical music, and how things worked.

His two boys that were never adopted but changed their names as young adults, carry on the Lindsey name and legacy as a tribute to the man who loved their mom and took them fishin'.

Farewell, Hugh Lindsey "Man of Action"

"I think I fish, in part, because it's an anti-social, bohemian business that, when gone about properly, puts you forever outside the mainstream culture without actually landing you in an institution."
John Gierach

"So you see, imagination needs moodling - long, inefficient, happy idling, dawdling and puttering."
Brenda Ueland

Beautiful tribute mom. I so wish I could've been there. I have only scattered memories of Grandpa Lindsey, but they are all sweet.

That was a sweet Tribute Nan. I feel like I knew him, even though I never met him. We're glad to be Lindseys

What a special tribute to such a special man. I never knew the story behind the Lindsey name, but I'm so glad to know it now.

I'm so sorry I didn't see your post earlier. I saw Tom yesterday and did not extend my condolences. Tom is one of the nicest people I know and I'm sure his dad played a huge role in molding his personality.
